English translation
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to the 2018 edition of Airfinance Journal’s Chinese-language edition. Since I wrote to you in last year’s edition, Airfinance Journal’s Hong Kong office has gone from strength to strength, providing you with more market intelligence on the Chinese and Asia-Pacific aircraft finance markets than ever before. We have expanded the editorial team in Hong Kong with the addition of our Chinese-speaking Greater China Reporter Guan Qinyu (Elsie), giving you a direct editorial port of call in your own language for sharing news and market information with us.
Our sales team member in Hong Kong is also a Chinese speaker, and our conference team – as before – remains Chinese speaking.
Last summer, Hong Kong’s legislative council passed groundbreaking tax reforms for aircraft leasing companies, reducing the effective tax rate for lessors domiciled in the city to just 1.65%. This legislative upheaval is sure to lead to more and more lessors from mainland China setting up in Hong Kong, and Airfinance Journal intends to provide you with in-depth coverage of these developments.
At this year’s Airfinance conference in Shanghai, we are introducing our Inaugural China Awards. We believe that activity in the Chinese aviation finance market has reached such a high point that it deserves its own dedicated awards, separate from our annual global Deals of the Year awards held in the United States.
Inside this issue
Our cover story in this issue takes a look at aviation development in Henan province, where several aviation companies, with the support of the local government, are taking advantage of the province’s strategic location in the centre of China.
Then we pay tribute to esteemed aviation finance lawyer Harvey Lau, who has retired from the industry. Lau is also serving on the judging panel for our Inaugural China Awards.
Our managing editor Laura Mueller interviews Valerie Tay, the chief financial officer of Transportation Partners about the challenges of being woman in the aviation finance market.
For our airline interview, we travel to Sichuan province to meet ARJ21 launch customer Chengdu Airlines and discuss their fleet requirements for the coming years.
In February, I was in Singapore for the Air Show. While there, I wrote a report about the intense competition banks and lessors are seeing in the market.
We also take a look at two challenges issues in the Chinese market: engine leasing, and how to repossess aircraft when things go wrong with a lease.
CDB Aviation’s chief executive officer Peter Chang shares his vision for lessor CDB Aviation and how he want to build a ‘global lessor with Chinese heritage’.
In our Deal Focus, we analyse an A380 deal arranged by Comsys, looking at how the ‘East meets West’
In our Jol/Jolco survey, we show how Chinese lessors demonstrated strong appetite for Japanese tax lease financing in 2017.
Finally, we introduce you to Taiwanese bank Cathay United, which has started targeting mainland Chinese lessors for financing transactions.
